Big Bend has some of the most spectacular scenery in Texas, if not the entire US. Our big sky country rivals any other state and our night skies are as dark as anywhere for excellent star gazing. The beautiful light and great scenery make for a photographer’s paradise.
Shooting a great landscape is 20% skill and 80% being in the right place at the right time. Please come down and give it your best shot. Our collection is replete with breathtaking landscapes, but it’s much harder to capture the human element.
We have launched our Video Collections with not only professionally produced segments to highlight lodging, dining and activity possibilities, but also personal vacation videos of people having lots of fun in Big Bend both behind and in front of the camera; Big Bend’s all time favorites.
As they say, everything is bigger in Texas. It does certainly seem that the Texas sky is bigger than in any other state. If you haven't experienced the flat plains, blue skies, and long, straight horizons offered in Texas, consider stopping by some time. You'll see just how seriously the Lone Star State takes the expression "wide open skies."
With larger than life scenery, you can understand why sometimes Texas landscapes just can't fit well into a simple photograph. Some things are just too big to fit in a picture frame, and in fact it feels that your mind can't even imagine the beauty and magnitude of such sights. With Big Bend, pictures are often pushed to their limits, trying to incorporate the Chihuahuan Desert, the winding Rio Grande, the Chisos Mountains, or those glorious Texas skies—all in a single frame.
Fortunately, technology has more to offer us than simple photos. We can now download and watch online videos just as quickly as digital photography. If you're following Visit Big Bend's Twitter feed, you may have noticed that we post links to great Flickr images of Big Bend and the surrounding area. While these photos are often breathtaking and enchanting, we'd like the world to see more of the action, motion, energy, and life of our little corner of Texas. So, we're highlighting Big Bend Videos as well. While you're always welcome to look in on Visit Big Bend's Flickr pool for more great pics, now you can also take a gander at our Video Collections.
We've launched the Video Collections just in time for Christmas. While this present won't fit under your tree, consider this as our gift to our loyal Big Bend fans. Now, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of Big Bend from the comfort of your home, hopefully bringing a bit of holiday cheer to your web browser.
What will you find on our video collections page? Think of it as the cream of the crop as far as Big Bend videos go. We continue to search through all the clips that places like Youtube and Vimeo have to offer so we can present to you videos that show energy and excitement, motion and emotion, shrills and thrills, and of course, that wide open Texas sky!
There are some views you just can't take in all at once. Like a dazzling sunset or breathtaking field of wildflowers—you just can't appreciate such beauty in the moment, a moment that is often over before you realize it, the forms and colors of that marvelous vista already fading in your memory. Perhaps it was with the goal of preserving such scenes that the first camera was invented, a goal that you may still share when you visit a place as beautiful as Big Bend and the surrounding area. Why not take a look through our new and improved photo galleries to see what amazing sights have been preserved by astounded visitors and appreciative locals? When you see the mountains, plains, flora, and fauna displayed in those images, you'll be glad the gallery contributors took their camera along.
Among the many activities available in Big Bend National Park that highlight the region's diversity of wildlife, birding can be enjoyable and promising. Big Bend engulfs a vast area, bounded by the the rushing Rio Grande valley to the south, containing high peaks in the Chisos Mountains, and boasting both desert and forest climates between the two. It embodies the very diversity that makes America great, providing countless opportunities to spot more than 450 birds in one area.
What are your new year's resolutions for 2012? Did you keep your resolutions for 2011? While the top resolutions each year include losing weight, learning something new, traveling, or getting out of debt, here's a new challenge you can take on this year: spot all the bird species in Big Bend National Park.

There are many things you may love to do in Big Bend National Park in the heat of summer, but running or jogging is probably not one of them. With 90+ degree temperatures, there simply is no such thing as a nice July run in West Texas. With the dry weather we've had this year, you have truly hostile workout conditions. That all changes this time of year, though, as temperatures drop and the sun gives us a break for a few months. What a great time to get out on some trails in Big Bend!
